RHB Singapore Cup: Balestier Khalsa vs Home United

Home look to stamp dominance over Tigers

One is a side whose dominance on the local scene since the inception of the S.League is unquestioned; the other, a team which has failed to break into the top six since the merger of tis parent clubs in 2002.

Yet, to succumb to the natural inclination to write off Balestier Khalsa's chances when they travel to the Clementi Stadium for their RHB Singapore Cup first round confrontation with Home United would be a decision born of convenience rather than wisdom.

Four-time Cup champions and last season's third-placed finishers in the league, the Protectors have already bested the Tigers once this term, with a Kengne Ludovick double and another from Peres de Oliveira helping them to a resounding 3-0 victory.

This season, Home United are also undefeated at their new Clementi Stadium home, the very venue which one of Balestier's founding clubs once called home.

Given their results on the road this season, however, the Protectors would well be wishing for the comforts and familiarity of a stadium they have plundered so many points at this season, rather than Balestier's Toa Payoh Stadium which must now appear more daunting than in previous seasons, the Tigers' woeful league position notwithstanding.

Home United have had a poor start to the 2009 campaign by their own standards, already tasting defeat five times away from home in their opening ten fixtures, a statistic that has left them languishing in mid-table.

With new signing Isa Halim in tow, the Protectors will be hoping for a good start as they look to improve a Cup run last season that was stopped at the quarter-final stage – incidentally the furthest their opponents on Wednesday night have ever gone in the competition.

Balestier, meanwhile, were last season’s S.League wooden spoonists and find themselves in that cruelly familiar rock bottom position in the S.League yet again.

Eliminated in the first round of last season’s competition, the Tigers redeemed themselves with an excellent run in the League Cup, surpassing most expectations to finish third and shocking SAFFC in the process – and coach Nasaruddin Jalil will be hopeful that his charges can pull off another surprise this time around even as he opined that Home United's dismal away record is but a temporary blip.

"If you look at it, Home United have the players with quality, so it is just a matter of time (before the results start to pick up).

"They have had their share of injury problems, but I believe they are still one of the teams to match. This match will be good exposure for the boys.

"We'll see (if we can surprise them). They are a good team, with good players and a good bench. We will have to work hard against them."

Nasa, as the coach is affectionately known, will be without the services of some of his most influential players – foreigners Seth Galloway and Julio Eduardo are injured, while captain Jufri Taha is a doubt – but he maintains that the rest of his players are geared up for the match.

"It's unfortunate that we won't have them available, but I think we have enough (quality) to play with, so we're looking forward to the game.

"To me there is no difference between the Cup or the League (in the way we approach the matches); it is just whether we get knocked out or if we get to progress and play in the next round or not.”

RHB Singapore Cup: Fandi aiming to gun down DPMM

All eyes will be on Singapore’s favourite footballing son Fandi Ahmad and his Pelita Jaya side as they look to hand Brunei DPMM their first loss of 2009 when the teams meet in the RHB Singapore Cup Preliminary Round on Wednesday.

It is the Indonesian club’s first foray into the competition but the “Young Guns” have some form of history on their side: the team from the sultanate has never progressed beyond this stage in five previous tries.

Having said that, the start that DPMM has made in its maiden Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League campaign suggests that Vjeran Simunic’s men are more than capable of embarking on a decent cup run.

With almost a third of the season gone, the club is sitting pretty atop the table and yet to taste defeat, with impressive wins over SAFFC and Gombak United, who occupy the second and third spots respectively.

Their excellent form has not gone unnoticed by opposition coach Fandi, who was under no illusions about the challenge that awaits his side.

“We’ve seen them play a few times and they seem to get stronger in every game,” he stated.

“We played them during the pre-season in 2008 and beat them twice but now they have a better coach in Simunic, are faster, have some experience in the team and have a few foreigners.”

One of those foreigners will be a familiar face to Fandi and most of his Pelita Jaya squad.

“Ivan Jerkovic used to play for us, just a season ago; he’s very dangerous from free-kicks and controls the midfield well,” he recalled.

However, he made sure to point out that he has at his disposal a few foreign imports with the ability to cause the opposition problems as well.

“We have two Brazilians: (Carlos) Eduardo, who has played in China and with the Flamengo youth team and (Cristiano) Lopes, who is our captain and top scorer,” he said.

“Lopes is carrying a bit of an injury but hopefully he’ll be able to give his best on Wednesday.”

Local clubs have struggled to handle DPMM’s physical style but Fandi dismissed any talk of it affecting his players.

He explained: “I know they are quite aggressive but Indonesian football is very hard and rough, so it’s something we are used to. We had the same treatment when we played against them in Brunei, so it’ll be nothing new to us.”

The winner of Wednesday’s game will face the winner of the TTM Samut Sakhon - Super Reds tie, meaning that Fandi will have to wait till at least the semi-final stage to face a local club.

The luck of the draw so very nearly pitted Pelita Jaya against the Young Lions, whom Fandi used to coach. Indeed, there was an air of disappointment when the Indonesians’ name came out of the pot just one spot too early.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh no, don’t play the Young Lions too early,’ since they are my old team,” Fandi said with a laugh.

“But generally, we are prepared to face any one. We are delighted to have been invited, even though it’s in the middle of our season, and it’s an opportunity for some of our younger players to gain some experience.”

“We came here to play football, entertain and win matches. We’re definitely going all out for a win.”

There will be no lack of motivation, either; the last three sides to send the Bruneians packing from this competition have gone on to reach the final, with Tampines Rovers lifting the trophy in 2006.

And with Fandi at the helm, the Young Guns might just be the sentimental favourites to do just that.

DPMM FC expect tough battle against Pelita Jaya.

What a great couple of days as DPMM FC are on top of the S-League table and still unbeaten after 10 games.

If there's anything that shows the universality of football, it's the fact that DPMM FC have played more games away than home, and they are still going strong.Not to mention the passion shown by players and fans when the DPMM FC is on the show.

The last few days showed which teams stand-out in the S-League and which ones won't.

Most would agree that DPMM FC head coach Vjeran Simunic is one confident man said, "DPMM go into every game looking for a win." Seems to be walking the walk, as the Croatian must have assessed SAF weakness after their loss against Kashima Antlers and gave Algerian Hamid Berguiga his debut.He repaid his faith by scoring one goal and created another in DPMM's 2-1 win against SAF FC.

Most DPMM fans are amazed with the depth and tactical discipline of DPMM's players but most would knowledge that the game against Indonesian outfit Pelita Jaya in the Singapore Cup, is a whole new "ball Game", literally.

Coached by former Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad and boast five outfield Brazilians, DPMM FC need to be aware that tactical discipline alone would not carry them through the 90-minute match.

Since the start of the Singapore Cup in 1998, many of the top teams in the region have taken part in this knock-out competition.

DPMM's players need to step-up their performances and to adhere to Simunic's game plan(as most of their S-League's games, keep tight in midfield and avoid unnecessary loss of ball possession)

In Pelita's Brazilian imports Cristiano Ronaldo and Evilasio, Rene Komar and Co certainly would have their hands full.

Pelita Jaya are known to play with a 4-4-2 formation and are known to be an attacking outfit and are quick on the counter-attack.

Having former Pelita player Ivan Jerkovic would help Simunic plan his strategy against their opponents.

The insight of Pelita's game would certainly aid Simunic in his team's performance for tonight's game. DPMM FC would certainly go into the game with full confidence, but most fans will would fear any lapses in concentration would would cost them dearly.

Taking the game against SAF. After taking a two-goal lead, DPMM FC's engine seemed to have shut down.The result was a sudden resurrection of SAF players that lead to their goal in the 87th minute. Too late, but could have been too closely!

Against Pelita, DPMM would be up against two hard working and nippy midfielders, Djalaludin and Khusnul who can turn-the-tide of a game in a moment.

With Brazilian Bizarro leading the defence, Pelita Jaya can be menace to DPMM's great start in the season.

The game in Jalan Besar Stadium tonight is certainly a test for Simunic and his team.
