RHB Singapore Cup 2009
Phnom Penh Crown 2 Young Lions 0
PHNOM Penh Crown FC defeated Young Lions 2-0 at the Jurong West Stadium last night to set up a quarter-final showdown with Bangkok Glass FC.
This was the current Cambodian League champions’ fourth appearance in the Singapore cup and the first time they made it past the first knockout stage. They were knocked out by SAFFC in 2006, their first appearance in the Cup, by Sengkang Punggol the following year and the Young Lions last season.
The Cambodians took the lead in the 25th minute when Cameroonian striker Jean Lappe Lappe played a clever one-two with fellow countrymen Oscar Mpoke before driving home.
Phnom Penh doubled their lead on the hour mark when Lappe Lappe scored with a header from close range.
Young Lions head coach Terry Pathmanathan was scathing in his post-match analysis.
“I’m disappointed with my players,” he said.
“What they put up today was real rubbish. They can’t even pass the ball.
“They are not football savvy at all. If they think they can make a livelihood out of football, they are kidding themselves.
“I don’t want to sound unfair but maybe they are just not good enough.”
