Warriors beaten in Brunei

BRUNEI – Singapore Armed Forces slipped to second in the 2009 S.League standings after going down 2-1 to DPMM on Sunday, ending a miserable week away for the Warriors.

Richard Bok’s side were looking to assert their domestic dominance having been hammered 5-0 by Kashima Antlers in the AFC Champions League clash in Japan four days earlier but it was another disappointing day on the road for SAF.

DPMM’s Croatian midfielder Ivan Jerkovic opened the scoring seven minutes into the clash at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium before Algerian import Abdelhamid Berguiga, who was starting due to the suspension of Oh Ddog-yi, doubled the home side’s lead two minutes into the second-half.

DPMM were reduced to ten men with 12 minutes left to play when skipper Pg Sallehuddin Damit picked up his second yellow card of the night but the Warriors couldn’t make their numerical advantage count until the 89th minute, with Thai midfielder Therdsak Chaiman curled home a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

Therdsak’s third of the season proved scant consolation for the Warriors as they dropped to second in the league with DPMM leapfrogging the defending champions into pole position.

After ten rounds the Brunei-based side lead the way with 22 points, one more than SAF and third placed Gombak United, who clawed back some of the goal difference between them and the Warriors with a 4-1 hammering of Balestier Khalsa in their round ten clash on Friday.
