High-riding Brunei DPMM FC will be hoping to break the jinx if exiting the first round of the Singapore Cup for the past few years when they take on Indonesian club Pelita Jaya tomorrow night at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Following a tough 2-1 win against S-League defending champion SAFFC on Sunday, Brunei DPMM FC will not have enough time to recuperate for the tough Indonesian encounter.
Brunei DPMM coach Simunic when met on training ground yesterday said: "It will be a big challenge for us this year, we want to break the jinx of losing in the first round of the Singapore Cup for the past five years."
"We celebrate a crucial win yesterday and now we have to play in the Singapore Cup on Wednesday. Maybe we could not recover completely but if can reproduce at least 75% of the performance against SAFFC, we will have no problem," he added.Simunic is in a dilemma of who should start first -Abdel Hamid or Ddog Yi - but the Croatian coach is keeping his option close to his chest till matchday.Abdel Hamid played a vital role in the win against SAFFC.The Algerian supplied a through ball for the opening goal and then scored Brunei DPMM's second.
On the Pelita Jaya team, Simunic said: "I managed to see one of their games and I feel the team is the same as Gombak or Tampines. They are a quality team in the Indonesian league which is one of the most competitive leagues in the region."
They have also some good players like Cristiano Lopes and Tiago Stragglioto of Brazil and Indonesian international player,Firman Utina.
Brunei DPMM will be at full strength as penalties incurred at the S-League will not be counted for the Singapore Cup.
Simunic also applauded the team's rising performance with each matches progressed.
"Our team have been improving from each match in the league. From Tampines to Gombak and then SAFFC, we have done remarkably well.I hope the team will continue to perform in the Singapore Cup and also the S-League."
