SSC staff, soccer players commended for detaining thief

SINGAPORE: A 38-year-old man - believed to be involved in several cases of theft - has been arrested for stealing a bag at Toa Payoh Stadium, thanks to the quick action by staff from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and two Balestier Khalsa Football Club (FC) players.

They were commended by the commander of the Tanglin Police Division for their public spiritedness leading to the arrest.

On Saturday, a 20-year-old man had left his sling bag unattended at the grandstand of Toa Payoh Stadium while he proceeded for his jog around the track.

Two staff members of the SSC spotted the suspect loitering aimlessly near the victim's bag and later saw him taking the sling bag and walking away hurriedly.

They immediately raised an alarm which attracted the attention of two Balestier Khalsa FC players who gave chase and managed to detain the suspect near the Toa Payoh Indoor Court.

Police said the suspect is believed to be involved in several similar cases at Toa Payoh Stadium and will be charged in court on Monday.
