The Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu is ready to host the South East Asia Festival of Football in May. |
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sabah government has vowed to raise the bar when it hosts the South East Asia region U13 Festival of Football next month.
This was the promise from Michael Emban, permanent secretary of the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry.
Emban made the comments during a preparation trip to Kota Kinabalu City last week by AFC Festival Project Manager Dr Annathurai Ranganathan.
Sabah successfully staged the U14 Festival of Football for Asean last year and was once again given the honour of hosting it again in 2009 by AFC and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
“We’d like to thank AFC and FAM for selecting Sabah and we promise that this year’s event will be ever better than the previous year,” he said.
The Festival will run from May 24 to June 6 and will feature all the countries in East Asia.
Dr Annathurai also met with officials from the Sabah Football Assocation, Sabah Education Ministry, Police Department, Health Ministry, Tourism Board, Immigration Department and other government representatives.
The matches will take place at the Likas Stadium. Apart from the competition itself, there will be a coaching course, referees course and a workshop for head coaches.
The Sabah event is one of five Festivals being held in Asia this year. The opening Festival was held in Doha from February 26 to March 9 in Doha, Qatar.
The Central Asian Festival is scheduled to start next week, from April 13-26, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, one day before the East Asian event in Beijing from April 14-27.
Tehran, in Iran, will stage the South Asian Festival from May 10-23.
