Earth Hour |
KUALA LUMPUR: AFC is throwing its support behind Earth Hour and will “switch off” for 60 minutes on Saturday at 8.30 pm.
AFC staff have also been encouraged to take part in the display of global solidarity, which was started in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund and the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper in Australia.
Earth Hour takes place on the last Saturday of March every year, at 8.30pm local time, when everyone is asked to turn off non-essential electrical and fuel-consuming entities for one hour.
The AFC initiative was prompted by staff member Galvin Tan, AFC’s Photo Manager, who is passionate about environmental matters.
The issue was discussed by AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam and Acting General Secretary Alex Soosay, both of whom gave their support.
Tan said of the 2008 Earth Hour: “The energy saved during Earth Hour (last year) was tremendous. Hundreds of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions were cut.”
According to reports, 82 countries, including Malaysia, have committed to observing Earth Hour on Saturday.
