SINGAPORE : Free kicks proved the scourge of the Young Lions as they fell to defending champions SAFFC 1-2 at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday evening.
John Wilkinson opened the scoring from the Warriors' first dead ball inside three minutes, driving his 25-yard effort low past Young Lions goalkeeper Jasper Chan after Gabriel Quak Jun Yi was adjudged to have handled the ball.
Eugene Luo fluffed a great opportunity to equalise on 36 minutes when he rounded Shahril Jantan only for Daniel Bennett to clear, but Obadin Aikhena started and then finished a good counterattacking move for the hosts on 67 minutes, heading home a cross by Luo's replacement Fadhil Noh to make it 1-1.
But substitute Shaiful Esah, who had barely come on for minutes, scored with a direct free kick just outside the box on 72 minutes to restore the advantage for Richard Bok's men, who now move two points clear at the top of the table. - sleague
