Sairol sends DPMM FC top

Winger, Sairol Sahri fired DPMM FC to the top of the league once again last night scoring two free-kicks to beat Gombak United 2-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, last night.

DPMM Fc were at the summit of the table for two days ladt month after their 1-0 win against Sengkang Punggol on March 24, but they dropped down to third when reigning champions Singapore Armed Forces FC and Gombak came up with wind in their respective matches.

Last night's top of the table clash between DPMM FC and Gombak gave the visitors a chance to reclaim the lead, and they got off a dream start when Sairol Saari found the back of the net through a free-kick on the third minute to score his second of the season.

His shot from the right floated past the entire Gombak defence and into the left netting, evading a flat-footed Fadhil Salim in between the Gombak goalposts.

It was the home side that threatened first though, taking hardly thirty seconds for Kingsley Njoku to connect on a cross from Nigerian Emmanuel Emujeraye on the right.

However, his well-taken volley rebounded off the cross bar, much to the relief of the raucous visiting fans.

Agu Camir had a shot that was cleard off the line by DPMM defender Yusof Salleh in the 12th minute and the Singaporeans would continue to control most of the first half.

Fully exploiting their height advantage,Gombak sent in numerous crosses into the box and one such attempt saw DPMM goalkeeper Wardun Yusof forced to make his first save of the night to deny Njoku in the 18th minute.

They finally equalised in the 29th minute when striker Emmanuel Emujeraye made the most of the mix-up between defender Rene Komar and Wardun, sliding past the Croatian libero to score with a low shot which gave the onrushing Wardun no chance at all.

DPMM FC continued to be bombarded with aerial threats, with Njoku responsible for a header in the 36th minute and a low shot to the right in the 44th minute to force Wardun into action.

Gombak started the second half the way they finished the first but they shifted down a few gears after a few minutes and allowed DPMM into the game.

Coming into prominence in the second half, midfielder Ivan Jerkovic had a golden opportunity to double DPMM's lead in the 47th minute after receiving a pass from Sairol Saari to unlock Gombak's defence and create a one-to-one situation with Fadhil.

In hindsight,Jerkovic probably should have brought the ball down to his feet after receiving it since his cheeky lob was too light and the goalkeeper managed to get his fingertips to it.

The visitors had several chances to threten through set-pieces but their delivery was poor and they failed to make the most of the opportunities gifted to them as the Gombak defenders scrambled to mark their men.

DPMM FC corrected all that in the 73rd minute when Sairol scored an almost identical goal to his first, sending the numerous DPMM fans who made the trip to the Jalan Besar Stadium into celebration.

Defender Sevki Sha'ban came up with a tame header which was comfortably saved by Wardun just seconds later, but the ball was nearly in the back of the other net again in the 75th minute when South Korean striker Oh Ddog Yi saw his shot on goal frantically cleared off the line by defender Jaslee Hatta.

Gombak should have found their equalising goal in the 80th minute when Casmir made a space inside the box for a header, but it floated right into the arms of Wardun.

Sairol had a chance to score a hat-rick a minute from time but his free-kick from a similar position as the first two was saved by Fadhil.

The win maintains DPMM's unbeaten streak in their debut S-League season, a record they share with Tampines Rovers.

For Gombak however, it was their first loss of the campaign and they now sit in second - a point adrift of DPMM.

DPMM FC's next game will be against Albirex Niigata at the Jurong East Stadium next Tuesday and they will not be returning to Brunei until Wednesday.
