SINGAPORE : Albirex Niigata (Singapore) registered their third consecutive home win on Thursday evening, beating the Young Lions 2-1 at Jurong East Stadium.
The White Swans opened their scoring after just eight minutes, Kenji Adachihara diverting home a teammate's header from a corner kick as the Young Lions were caught napping.
Albirex extended their lead in the 31st minute, Tetsuya Kishida connecting with captain Taisuke Akiyoshi's free kick with an outrageous horse-kick as he had his back to goal.
The Young Lions came back aggressively in the second half, but they only managed a consolation goal in injury time through defender Obadin Aikhena.
In a separate match, new head coach Mike Wong got his tenure off to a winning start, as Geylang United ended their two-game losing streak with a 1-0 home win at the expense of the Super Reds.
The only goal of the game at Bedok was scored in the 5th minute by English forward Lloyd Butler, who was making his senior debut for the club.
Super Reds dominated for the remainder of the game, but could not find a way past a stout Geylang defence who held firm for the three points.
The win lifted Geylang to seventh place in the league table, one spot above the Koreans. - sleague.com
