The Road to London 2012 starts now

Singapore has started its football preparations for the 2012 London Olympics with an initial call-up of 27 players by National Olympic Team Head Coach, V. Sundramoorthy on Tuesday 3 March 2009.

The players will train twice weekly and prepare with fortnightly friendly matches. This current list of players will be subjected to changes as Head Coach Sundram continues to monitor and short-list players from the Prime League.

“There are some interesting players in the squad, but it will take some time for them to progress up to the next level and we are still on an island-wide look out to get the best players to eventually represent the country.”

The 2012 London Olympics will see the 28 teams who have qualified play at six iconic football arenas including Manchester United’s Old Trafford and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, with the finals being held at London’s Wembley Stadium.

However, since 1992, players of the men’s Olympic competition must be under 23 years of age, with only three over-23 players allowed per squad, effectively making it an Under-23 competition.

Thus, the group Sundram has picked are all born on or after 1989 and his first target will be to groom the boys for the Vietnam Youth Newspaper Tournament that is scheduled to take place in Sep/Oct 2009 before he works on preparing the squad for the preliminary rounds of qualifying, which should start sometime in early 2011.

“It will be a long journey for the boys who will finally make the team and the squad of players I have now are all eager and working hard for that chance.”
